Fear not, I too was baptized into the Lord's church when I was 13 and now I'm 60. I've been a deacon in three congregations, including one in Okinawa, Japan. I'd like to clear up this little matter about being saved by faith only. I'm sorry but we MUST present the Whole Counsel of God on ALL Biblical matters as important as this one. Yes Paul seemed to be obsessed about this topic of being saved by faith, mainly because of the Jewish christian's background of relying on their works from the previous regime of the Mosaic Law. But you seem to have forgotten the very clear teaching of James 2, which teaches and promotes most emphatically that this is only half the story. James 2 is the only place in the NT with the phrase "faith only" except it's preceded with the word "NOT." No you cannot be saved with faith only because it's a "dead faith." Works or deeds of faith prove our faith to be real and genuine. Paul didn't see the need of saying these kind of words because his whole life of works for Christ showed it. We as christians MUST strive for balance in our walk with Christ. Why? Because our Lord knows us better than we'll EVER know ourselves. Thus we must worship God Almighty in Truth AND in Spirit. We must love God first and foremost in our lives AND we must love our fellow man at least as much as we love ourselves. We must don the Full Armor of God AND we must adopt the Fruit of the Spirit. Lastly at least for now we must have solid and genuine trusting faith in our God AND we must have works to prove that faith to the world showing our talents to our God as He Commanded through His Son's Parable on this topic. Again why must we have balance as shown throughout the NT as cited above? I'm thinking one good reason is to keep us humans busy for the Lord and less time for griping and grumbling as we're known to do like the Jews of old. It's one of our greatest weaknesses. You might compare all the couples above like faith AND works to the man of long ago on TV spinning plates on poles, sometimes up to 5 of them at one time. If you tackle all those AND couples, you'll never reach Perfection but we all MUST try. I know I haven't reach Perfection but I'm still in the right punching away, as is my Dad at 92. He's an Assisted Living Facility but he still walks around singing songs and sharing Christ, occasionally taking someone to worship with him. God Bless you all in your continued study of God's Word.
